Fenwick launches Fuego in Kingston

On Saturday 29th October we were invited along to try the new Fuego by Fenwick restaurant on the first floor of Fenwick department store.

As one of its own restaurant concepts, Fuego Kingston is the fourth site to open unde the Fenwick brand following openings in Newcastle, Bracknell and Brent Cross. The design-led, new restaurant offers a selection of all-day tapas, generous sharing charcuterie and cheese boards, traditional tortillas and stone-baked and Napoli-style sourdough pizza.

Locals to Kingston will be introduced to much-loved Fuego classics that pay homage to the Mediterranean including Jamon Ibèrico Bellota, an acorn fed Pata Negra ham aged for three years, gambas a la plancha with garlic & chilli and a courgette, apple & Ibores salad with Chardonnay dressing & truffle oil. For Autumn/Winter 2023, seasonal dishes include crispy sea bass in a light kataifi pastry and mojo verde mayonnaise and a vibrant beetroot salad with yoghurt, almonds and molasses.

Not knowing what to expect we were surprised by the lay-out of the restaurant. Fuego Kingston by Fenwick features a light-filled, open-plan layout, complete with a sit-up champagne and cocktail bar serving classic aperitifs, including a Fuego margarita with chilli salt, alongside house recommendations featuring gin and vodka martinis. A selection of freshly-made, non-alcoholic cocktails include a passionfruit cooler and mint spritz. An extensive new wine list is available with all bottles listed available to buy in the store’s Wine Room.

On arrival, we were greeted and given a choice of where to sit. We could have sat at the champagne bar but decided on a table and we were met by our waiter Antonio and offered a glass of Champagne. we weren’t going to say no to that.   Antonio’s knowledge, not only of the menu, but also of the ingredients is second to none. His job was not just to take our orders but to guide us on a culinary journey through the menu.

Being lunchtime and out in the evening we didn’t want to have to much so went for the Fuego Selection Sharing Board with charcuterie, cheese, tortilla, courgette, apple & Ibores salad, beetroot salad, molasses & yoghurt, marinated gordals, harissa-roasted squash & feta toast. We also picked Crispy seabass, kataifi pastry & mojo verde mayonnaise also Pork belly pinxo and a Garlic & mozzarella sourdough. Being Tapas we thought that would be enough not to much. We were wrong. The portions were bigger than we expected.

The flavours were amazing and each time Antonio was on hand to describe the sauces and what was on our plates. If I had one moan, and it is only one, I never understand why with tapas, a dish for sharing, the pork and the sea bass came as 3 items and not 4, especially as we were a couple. We ended up fighting who had what as they were both delicious.

We were stuffed but I spotted on the menu Rice pudding brûlée served chilled with orange & pistachio. Now if there is one thing I can’t turn down is a rice pudding and the combination of a rice pudding brûlée with orange & pistachio I somehow had to try. I was not disappointed. The crunch of the brûlée revealed the rice pudding and the taste was amazing. I seriously think I would go back just for rice pudding it was that good.

A series of interactive masterclasses and events are scheduled to run across all Fuego by Fenwick restaurants throughout November and December. These include sommelier-hosted wine pairing evenings, offering guests the opportunity to try a selection of handpicked wines, and cocktail masterclasses in partnership with climate-positive British brand Sapling Spirits.

Conclusion:

Would we go back and the answer is definitely YES. The minute you walk into the restaurant you are whisked away from the hassle and bustle of the shopping centre to an elegant restaurant where you can sit, relax and enjoy wonderful food and wine.

The cost was very reasonable considering the portion sizes and the quality of the food. It’s a place we would visit during a long day shopping or for a special treat and we would highly recommend it next time you are in Kingston.  It is such a relaxing place. Please Note we were guests of Fenwick and the meal was complimentary. This in no way affects our review. If it was poor we would say

Three PSPOs in Dorking and Leatherhead extended

Feedback received during a five-week public consultation exercise run over the summer has helped inform Mole Valley District Council’s decision to renew the Public Spaces Protection Orders in place at Meadowbank Recreation Ground and Dorking town centre, and to agree a new, slightly expanded, order for Leatherhead town centre.

Three Public Spaces Protection Orders (PSPOs) in Meadowbank Recreation Ground and Leatherhead and Dorking town centres were due to expire in October 2023, and Mole Valley District Council (MVDC) had to decide whether to extend one, two, or all three PSPOs before they lapsed.

PSPOs can be introduced in an identified location to help address specific concerns of low-level anti-social behaviour. PSPOs give MVDC and Surrey Police the power to issue a Fixed Penalty Notice or start formal prosecution if one or more of the specific anti-social behaviour restrictions set out in a PSPO is breached by an individual or a group of people.

Leatherhead town centre
The Dorking and Leatherhead town centre PSPOs in place since 2020 restrict the public consumption of alcohol in our town centres. The Meadowbank PSPO, also in place for the past three years, covers the consumption of alcohol, use of intoxicating substances, dog fouling and restricting dog access in the park, including the playground.

MVDC ran three individual area-specific public consultations from 5 June to 10 July 2023 to understand whether there was support from local residents and businesses to not only renew the PSPOs, but help decide how long they should be extended for – within the maximum available period of three years – and whether the conditions set out in the PSPOs were still relevant.

Responses to the consultation were, in the main, supportive of a PSPO remaining in the three locations for the maximum three year period. To view the results of these consultations, in addition to information about two other recently renewed PSPOs in Mole Valley, please visit www.molevalley.gov.uk/pspo.

Having considered feedback received during the public consultation, alongside responses from other stakeholders such as Surrey Police, MVDC has agreed that the PSPOs will remain in place for the next three years. The Meadowbank and Dorking town centre PSPOs have been renewed, and a new slightly expanded Leatherhead town centre PSPO that now covers Sunmead Parade has been introduced until October 2026.

Mole Valley District Commander, Inspector James Green, said: “Surrey Police has worked closely with MVDC to review the effectiveness of the PSPOs and are fully support the current renewals. PSPOs are very effective in deterring anti-social behaviour in areas that have, in the past, been subject to higher levels of ASB. We are committed to supporting joint initiatives to patrol and enforce the PSPOs in order to create a safer community for all.”

Councillor Paul Kennedy, MVDC’s Cabinet Member for Internal Services and Security, said: “I would like to thank everyone who contributed to the consultations, and helped support our decision to renew all three PSPOs. Many local residents and businesses clearly value these measures to deter antisocial behaviour in our public spaces, and want to see them enforced. So I particularly welcome Surrey Police’s commitment to extending joint patrols with MVDC’s own Joint Enforcement Team.”

Epsom & Ewell Local Plan process to be un-paused

Councillors at Epsom & Ewell Borough Council have voted to un-pause their Local Plan, at an Extraordinary Council meeting on Tuesday 24 October.

The decision means that it is now possible for work to restart to progress the Local Plan to the next stage, which is a further public consultation on the proposed submission version of the Local Plan (Regulation 19).

A Local Plan sets the vision and framework for development in the borough, focusing on a wide range of areas such as supporting businesses, creating jobs, infrastructure improvements, environmental protection and leisure development, alongside sites for new homes including affordable accommodation. The council’s Local Plan has been paused since March of this year, when a motion brought to an Extraordinary Council meeting was approved.

Cllr Steven McCormick, Chair of the Licensing and Planning Policy Committee, said: “We are very pleased that work on the Local Plan can recommence. We are legally required to review our Local Plan every five years, and are currently outside of that timeframe, which leaves us open to the risk of speculative development or government intervention.

“We recognise that the pause came about because of strength of feeling in the community regarding the inclusion of green belt sites in the Draft Local Plan, and want to reassure our residents and partners that their views and feedback will be taken into account in the next iteration of the Local Plan. Since the Local Plan was paused, council officers have been working hard on analysing all responses received during our Draft Local Plan consultation period in early 2023.

“We have also completed our call for sites which has brought forward some additional potential brownfield sites for development, which will now be carefully considered.

“Now that we can move forward with this work, we will prepare an updated Local Plan timetable (the Local Development Scheme), which will set out the key milestones for progressing the Local Plan towards adoption. All Councillors will be involved in the development of the proposed submission version of the Local Plan, and at a future meeting of full Council they will collectively decide if it is ready for the next stage of public consultation.

“We are committed to developing a Local Plan that allows all those who live, work, visit and study in the borough to thrive.”

Epsom & Ewell Project Wenceslas

Project Wenceslas: enabling local people to support those struggling to pay fuel bills this winter. For the seventh year running, Citizens Advice Epsom & Ewell (CAEE) has teamed up with the Rotary Clubs of Epsom and Ewell to bring much needed support to those in the borough in need of help with paying fuel bills this winter. Project Wenceslas enables those who receive, but do not need, the Government’s Winter Fuel Payment to donate it to either Rotary Club of Epsom or Rotary Club of Ewell. This money will be distributed to people in critical need of assistance with energy bills, much needed during the Cost of Living crisis.   All monies donated are redistributed 100% without any deductions for costs or expenses. Lisa Davis, CEO, Citizens Advice Epsom & Ewell, said: “With energy bills still the biggest cost-of-living worry for many individuals and families across the country, this fund is a crucial support for those in our borough. Please get in touch if either you want to donate your Winter Fuel Payment, or you are in need of support.” Since January 2018, CAEE has received nearly £15,000 in donations and made over 170 payments to families in Epsom & Ewell suffering from fuel poverty. Epsom & Ewell Borough Council to launch the Playing Out scheme

Epsom & Ewell Borough Council will be introducing a temporary road closure scheme to allow children to play in the streets where they live.

The Playing Out scheme will enable streets which are not main roads or bus routes to be closed to through traffic for up to three hours at a time.

Residents who are interested in taking part in the scheme would need to get the agreement of their neighbours, find and train volunteer stewards to man the road closure points and carry out a risk assessment. Parents remain responsible for their own children.

The scheme was approved at the Community and Wellbeing Committee on 10 October 2023 and will launch in December 2023.

Councillor Clive Woodbridge, Chair of the Community and Wellbeing Committee, said: “More than 90 local authorities have introduced the Playing Out scheme in their areas, and I’m really pleased to see this initiative come to Epsom and Ewell.

We believe the scheme will help support the mental, physical and emotional wellbeing of children and the community by creating a safe and inclusive space for everyone to play in and by fostering a much needed sense of neighbourliness.”

Ashley Palmer-Watts to Launch New Restaurant in Cobham

One of the UK’s most talented chefs will return to the restaurant scene early next year with a unique collection of openings based in the picturesque village of Cobham in Surrey.

In spring 2024, Ashley Palmer-Watts, who shot to prominence during a 20-year career with The Fat Duck Group that saw the Dorset-born chef earn two Michelin stars at Dinner by Heston Blumenthal at the Mandarin Oriental Hyde Park, will launch the first phase of a new culinary destination.

Plans to transform the former site of The Garden Cobham are well underway. The destination will incorporate a 35-seat high-end restaurant with additional seating on a garden terrace, a 52-seat wine bar, a café, and a bakery, all set around a beautiful courtyard. In time, luxury guest accommodation will be added to the offering. Alongside the varied dining options, the outside space is being restored to its former glory, with an extensive kitchen garden, all set within an historic, two-acre landscaped walled garden.

Under the leadership of Palmer-Watts, The Garden Cobham is set to become a new culinary and lifestyle hotspot in Surrey, and will also be available for weddings and private events. Palmer-Watts, who launched Artisan Coffee Co two years ago, will be showcasing the coffee products throughout the business.

Palmer-Watts comments: “I can’t wait to be back in the heart of the industry, drawing on all my experience of opening various restaurants at different levels within The Fat Duck Group. It’s an incredible location, and with food history being of such interest, particularly in recent years, to be able to bring life back into the walled garden and reimagine it with a collection of food experiences is a dream come true for me. I look forward to sharing further details of the project as we near completion of the work.”

About Ashley Palmer-Watts

Ashley Palmer-Watts has had an extraordinary career, including 20 years at The Fat Duck Group, where he became one of their most significant figures. The Dorset-born chef first experienced a taste of restaurant life aged 13, when he started working as a kitchen porter at Le Petit Canard in Maiden Newton, going on to join the restaurant as an apprentice.

After visiting The Fat Duck in early 1999, blown away by his experience, he showered creator Heston Blumenthal with requests to join the team. Ashley eventually started working with the five-strong kitchen brigade at The Fat Duck in August 1999, just after the Bray-based restaurant had been awarded it’s first Michelin star.

By 2002, Ashley was promoted to sous chef and the iconic restaurant was awarded a second Michelin star. The following year, aged just 25, he was named head chef. Fast becoming one of the world’s most influential establishments, it won a third star under his leadership in 2004.

Four years later, Ashley became executive head chef for The Fat Duck Group. He oversaw The Fat Duck, The Hinds Head, The Crown in Bray, and subsequently the development and opening of The Perfectionists’ Café at London Heathrow.

In 2009, Heston offered Ashley the opportunity of opening a restaurant in the London. It was to be based around British culinary history. Ashley then started work on the menu for the opening of Dinner by Heston Blumenthal at the Mandarin Oriental Hyde Park. This quickly became a ground-breaking restaurant, weaving together culinary history and modern cuisine. The restaurant was awarded its first Michelin star in 2012, a second in 2013, and was featured in the top ten of the World’s 50 Best Restaurants for seven years.

In 2014, Ashley was instrumental in The Fat Duck’s relocation to Melbourne, where it operated for 6 months, whilst the Bray restaurant was being renovated. The Melbourne space went on to be transformed into the second Dinner by Heston Blumenthal in October 2015. Ashley split his time between London and Melbourne, becoming part of the Melbourne and wider Australian food scene, regularly appearing on MasterChef Australia.

In December 2019, after two decades with The Fat Duck Group, Ashley decided to leave the group to pursue and develop new interests. In 2020, he launched Artisan Coffee Co., speciality coffee created through the eyes of a chef.
