We are seeking a new Head of HR and Volunteering to lead the HR & volunteering team, who provide a generalist HR service spanning the entire employee lifecycle for our Museum team of 65 permanent staff and 63 casual workers, as well as managing our volunteering programme for approximately 700 award-winning volunteers. Volunteers are integral to the operation and conservation of the Museum; we could not open our exhibits daily without them and they are the face of Brooklands for the majority of our visitors. They are regularly mentioned in our fantastic TripAdvisor reviews. This role will require you to be actively responsible for and involved with the management and development of the volunteering programme at the Museum. With such a large number of volunteers it takes effort and proactivity to ensure they are informed, appreciated and supported to help the Museum and to have the best possible volunteering experience. We also run a first-class Duke of Edinburgh programme and have been working hard to diversify our volunteer base, including taking part in ‘Time To Change,’ a Surrey based initiative to encourage young people into volunteering.
Being part of a small team in a fast-paced environment, there will always be an element of operational day to day guidance needed but this will be mixed with project and strategic development work, overseeing the running of the department and actively being part of the Museum Management Team. The Museum Management Team collectively have a key leadership role to play in the Museum taking responsibility for the activities of their own departments, whilst working collaboratively to create and deliver Museum improvement plans for the next 1-2 years. You will also work with the wider Museum teams to deliver Brooklands Museum’s vision, charitable aims, commercial business objectives and make our ambitious growth plans a reality.
No two days are the same at our unique and historic site, the museum is fast paced and a fun place to work and you will be able to make a real difference to the team who care for Brooklands, enabling them to develop and be their best. You will need to be as happy leading from the front and getting hands on as you are developing and delivering business plans and procedures.
As a relatively new function for the Museum, the team are working to establish and embed procedures, amongst a backdrop of legacy in certain areas, so you must be comfortable dealing with a level of ambiguity, informality and flexibility whilst working collaboratively with colleagues to ensure proposals are suitable and change is managed appropriately.
We are ambitious and have big plans, so there will be plenty of projects for you to play a key role in, in particular driving the development of our Brooklands Commitment, part of our Ignition organisational development programme which we started in 2019, this includes a focus on diversity and inclusion as well as the creation of a 5 year Museum Business Plan, a process which will start in the first quarter of 2023.
We are a charity as well as a visitor attraction, with a variety of departments (e.g. retail, hospitality, curatorial, operations as well as the many volunteer teams) that all have unique requirements, so it is essential that you are able to work flexibly and creatively in order to provide the best possible HR and volunteering service to our diverse teams.
