Sutton Symphony Orchestra: Spring Concert 2023

Sutton Symphony Orchestra present their latest concert, featuring Elgar’s Sea Pictures with soloist Maggie Cooper, Dvořák’s Symphony No 7 and a brand new piece by Carshalton-born composer David Hackbridge Johnson, River Wandle Suite. Join us on Saturday 25th March 7.30pm at St Andrews URC, Cheam.

David Hackbridge Johnson has had his music performed by the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra, Royal Scottish National Orchestra and Welsh National Opera, among others. His commission for Sutton Symphony Orchestra, River Wandle Suite, takes us along the Wandle from Carshalton Ponds, past the water grasses and mills into a rousing finale.

From the Wandle to the ocean – Elgar’s Sea Pictures set to music five poems inspired by the sea’s beauty, power and even danger, and are full of the same melodic richness that made his famous Enigma Variations such a success. And then there is Dvořák’s Seventh Symphony. From its foreboding opening to the lyrical second movement (largely considered some of the composer’s finest work) and the lilting rhythms of the third movement, it ends with a resounding and satisfyingly-brassy finale.

‘I am now busy with the new Symphony and wherever I go I have no thought for anything but my work, which must be such as to move the world — well, God grant that it may be so!’ Dvořák on his Symphony No 7

Sutton Symphony Orchestra is a group of orchestral music enthusiasts and amateur performers, primarily local to Sutton and South London, conducted by Philip Aslangul and led by Annmarie McDade. We are thrilled to be joined on-stage by London-based mezzo-soprano Maggie Cooper for this concert.

Ashtead Choral Society – A Sea Symphony

Ashtead Choral Society presents a concert celebrating the 150th Anniversary celebrations in 2022 of Ralph Vaughan Williams’ birth. This concert features three of his well-known works.
Our main offering will be A Sea Symphony – a compelling work, in which a choir is used throughout and is an integral part of the musical texture. The text comes from American poet Walt Whitman’s Leaves of Grass.
The programme includes The Lark Ascending – a popular evocative well-known single movement work with solo violin played by leader of the orchestra Christian Halstead.
Also featured will be Five Mystical Songs – a showcase for baritone solo and piano.
We are pleased to be welcoming back Kent Sinfonia and soloists Eleanor Pennell-Briggs (soprano), Philip Tebb (baritone) and Stephen Ridge (piano). The concert will be conducted by Musical Director Andrew Storey.

Erato Orchestra Concert – March 2023

The “Clock” Symphony was enthusiastically reviewed at its première. “HAYDN; the inexhaustible, the wonderful, the sublime HAYDN! The first two movements were encored; and the character that pervaded the whole composition was heartfelt joy.”

Two compositions by Mozart complete the Erato Orchestra’s March concert programme: the most requested concerto in the bassoon repertoire and the “Haffner” Symphony one of Mozart’s most famous. Definitely an evening to look forward to!
