Epsom & Ewell Council announce partnership with the Lawn Tennis Association

Epsom & Ewell Borough Council announce partnership with the Lawn Tennis Association to improve local tennis courts

Epsom & Ewell Borough Council and the Lawn Tennis Association (LTA) have announced a partnership to invest in and refurbish public tennis courts in Epsom & Ewell.

The LTA will provide £26,650 to invest in 12 tennis courts at Auriol Park, Alexandra Recreation Ground, Court Recreation Ground, Gibraltar Recreation Ground and Poole Road Recreation Ground.

The courts will benefit from gate access technology, a new online booking platform and court improvements which will ensure that quality facilities are available for the local community.

Alongside the investment, the council and local coach providers will also work with the LTA to deliver a range of activity across the park sites. This will include weekly, free tennis sessions for all ages, playing levels and experience where equipment is provided, meaning that people will not need someone to play with or their own racket. Local Tennis Leagues will also provide friendly, sociable, opportunities to get active through local competitions.

As part of the LTA’s Parks Investment Programme, the council will introduce a new ‘pay as you play’ scheme across all tennis courts in the borough in the new year. All income raised from the scheme will be reinvested into the borough’s tennis facilities to ensure future sustainability of tennis in parks.

Cllr John Beckett, Chair of the Environment Committee said: “The partnership between the LTA and the council is extremely good news for the tennis facilities in the borough. Their investment and the move to a ‘pay as you play’ scheme will ensure that the courts are maintained and improved into the future.

“The tennis courts are vital in providing opportunities for residents to get active and improve both their physical and mental health. The planned free coaching sessions will provide an opportunity to bring new people to the sport from all ages, abilities and socioeconomic backgrounds.”

Julie Porter, Chief Operating Officer at the LTA, said: We are delighted to be working with Epsom & Ewell Borough Council to improve their park tennis facilities and provide more opportunities for anyone to pick up a racket and get active.

“This investment is part of the UK Government and LTA’s Parks Tennis Project and will mean that courts will be available for people to use for years to come.

“We will also be working closely with Epsom & Ewell Borough Council to ensure that the local community have a range of accessible opportunities to get on court, and open up our sport to many more people.”

The project is part of a nationwide investment by the UK Government and LTA Tennis Foundation, delivered by the LTA, to refurbish public tennis courts across Great Britain, and open up the sport to many more people. This investment will see thousands of existing park tennis courts in poor or unplayable condition brought back to life for the benefit of communities across the country through renovation works, and improved court accessibility with new gate-access technology and booking systems.

A range of payment options will be available for people to get on court, including an individual court hire fee and an affordable season pass.

The costs for users who will book are:

Ad-hoc Cost Per Hour All Courts£6.00
Additional Cost Per Hour for Floodlights£6.00

Annual Household Subscription£40.00
Annual Household Subscription for those in receipt of low-income benefits£20.00

All income generated will be going back into the improvement of the facilities with a priority of improving the courts at Gib/Poole Road first.

All sites will be available to book online via the LTA website www.lta.org.uk/play

What would your three-year-old do in an emergency?

It was just a normal sunny afternoon in July when PC Emma Robinson, answered a 999 call that just ‘seemed a bit off’. Emma, who is currently on secondment in our Contact Centre after first joining Surrey Police 15 years ago, picked up an aborted call.

When ringing the number back, the phone was answered by a rather cheeky three-year-old boy called Oscar. During this first call to us, Oscar was very talkative and kept asking for his ‘Gaga’. Although most people might just dismiss the call as a mere accident, luckily Emma’s intuition and police training told her something was not quite right.

Emma explained: “Oscar was very talkative, cheeky and seemed in good spirits, but I just had a feeling that something was off. He hung up the phone a few times, so I decided to call back and ask him more questions to see if we could work out what was going on.

“After a while Oscar managed to tell me that his mother was ‘sleeping’ and that she wouldn’t wake up. He also disclosed that she was ‘blowing bubbles’ and I then knew that we needed to get an ambulance there as quickly as possible.

“Being only three years old, Oscar was not able to tell me his address, but between us we managed to work out where they were and where we needed to send emergency services. The ambulance service also managed to call Oscar and speak to him regarding his mother.

“Fortunately, the ambulance crew and our officers arrived very quickly on the scene and his mother made a full recovery!”

To recognise Oscar’s fast thinking and care, him and his family were invited to our Guildford Headquarters to have a ride in a police vehicle and meet Emma, the emergency operator who took his call.

He was also presented with his very own bravery certificate and police teddy bear by our Chief Constable Tim De Meyer and Head of Contact Chief Superintendent Juliet Parker.

Oscar’s mum, Iona, added: “Oscar loves everything to do with the police and cars so to come in and have a look around was a great experience for him. He is very excited to take his certificate and teddy into his nursery’s ‘show and tell’ this week.

“I am very lucky that Oscar knew to ring 999 and get me help and I think it just shows how important it is that we tell our children to do this when something feels wrong or dangerous. Without that, who knows what would have happened!”

Multi-million pound transformation for Surrey libraries

A multi-million investment into Surrey’s libraries has been approved by Surrey County Council’s Cabinet to modernise services and create flexible, innovative and inclusive spaces that best meet the needs of our residents. This will revolutionise our libraries offer and make them fit for the future.

The first phase of this work will focus on key libraries including Epsom, Redhill, Staines, Woking and Weybridge with completion expected by the end of 2024.

The work is part of our library strategy focused on ensuring that Surrey libraries deliver a service that is fit for the future and accessible to all. The plans include significant changes at each location, including the creation of community ‘Hubs’ in Staines and Weybridge.

For Epsom, Woking and Redhill this means the creation of flagship facilities that will include:

Flexible meeting rooms with kitchenette
Moveable partitions/walls to create agile workspaces
Meeting pods
New furniture
A fully flexible layout throughout with space for events and performances, exhibitions, partner organisations and community use

Community Infrastructure Levy (CIL) funding of £500k has been secured for Redhill Library from Reigate and Banstead Borough Council.

For Staines, this will include:

Creation of a state-of-the-art flagship modern Library and Cultural Centre
Relocation to the former Decathlon store located in the Elmsleigh shopping centre
The new hub will include Citizens Advice, Voluntary Action, Spelthorne Museum and other lettable space.
Integration of Spelthorne Museum into the layout of the library will create an enhanced resident experience
External branding to windows and brickwork and landscaping to outside area

For Weybridge, this will include:

Extending the ground floor library space
Improving the current spaces and facilities to better serve the building’s current occupiers such as Brooklands Radio and create a space for other partner organisation to deliver additional essential services
External upgrade to improve the look of the building
The refurbishment will also reduce energy use and carbon emissions, contributing to the Council’s net zero ambitions
A fully flexible layout throughout with space for events and performances, exhibitions, partner organisations and community use

Denise Turner-Stewart, Deputy Leader and Cabinet Member for Communities and Community Safety at Surrey County Council, said: “It’s fantastic to be able to invest in our libraries and create cultural and community hubs so they are better placed to serve Surrey’s residents. The improvements will provide the opportunity to redesign and refurbish some of our key libraries, providing updated, attractive and inviting places where people can read, socialise, study and relax. This work is all about making sure Surrey’s libraries are all vibrant hubs, providing warm, friendly spaces where everyone is welcome.”

image of clive woodbridgeCllr Clive Woodbridge, Chair of the Community & Wellbeing Committee at Epsom & Ewell Council, said: “It is fantastic news that our much-loved library in Epsom is going to receive this investment. Our libraries are a vital resource for so many of the borough’s residents, and ensuring that Epsom Library is fit for the future and accessible to all will mean our communities can benefit from all it has to offer for years to come.”

The development of the libraries follows on from the approval of the 2019 Library and Cultural Services Strategy and is closely aligned with the Surrey 2030 Community Vision and the Hubs programme, which looks to deliver services in a joined-up way allowing residents to access multiple services in one location and support the council’s ultimate ambition – that no one is left behind.
